<span style="font-family: "pea nancy"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Ah! The preteen years. Defined as the period of adolescence between
the ages of 9 and 12. Advice in a KidsHealth
article stated that “Your preteen may act as if your guidance
isn't welcome or needed, and even seem embarrassed by you at times.” As
a parent in a home with four preteens I believe I’m well equipped to offer some
amazing advice on how to be hip and cool during these formative years. Que evil laughter.

<span style="font-family: "pea nancy"; font-size: 9.0pt;">I
know that it may hurt you deep into your soul to realize that you must part
with your favorite car and turn to the dark side, but the minivan is the only
vehicle to have when raising preteens.
Not only are you incredibly stylish as you roll up to the front of the
school to pick up your little darling, the automatic sliding doors makes it
possible for your kiddo to jump out quickly and run off without the “I love you
mom!”. They don’t even need to waste
time trying to close the door because you have the power to shut them right at
your fingertips. <span style="font-family: "pea nancy"; font-size: 11.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "pea nancy"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Surely
you have some Facebook friends hocking their line of super comfy and trendy looking
one size fits all leggings. Find that
friend and order everything they have.
Give up on wearing your favorite shorts or worn in jeans. Only the coolest moms have perfectly printed
leggings for every occasion. Now you may
think that you should wear those buttery-soft leggings under a long shirt or a
dress, but to that I say NO! You will
earn extra cool points with your preteen if you wear the leggings as pants and
choose a shirt that hits right at the waist.

<span style="font-family: "pea nancy"; font-size: 9.0pt;">So
you’ve just finished your shopping trip at the local Target and realize it’s
almost time for your amazing offspring to eat lunch. All the cool moms know that showing up
unannounced at school is exactly what your child wants most, especially if you
come bearing tasty treats from their favorite fast food joint. So pull up a chair, pour out some fries, and
join your kiddo for a spur of the moment school lunch. If it is a really special occasion, you can
forego the restaurant food and opt for getting your lunch straight from the
cafeteria lunch line.<span style="font-family: "pea nancy"; font-size: 11.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "pea nancy"; font-size: 9.0pt;">Whether
they are coming over to see what you brought for that surprise lunch or if they
are just hanging out at the house for the evening, show your cool mom skills by
talking to your preteen’s friends every time you see them. Make sure you use the latest lingo and are up
to date on the most popular YouTubers like PewDiePie or DanTDM. Your kid’s friends will know your level of
awesomeness from all of your appropriate references to pop culture and your
ability to dab like a pro. Your daughter shaking her head and saying, “Mom,
please.” is only because she is begging for more.<span style="font-family: "pea nancy"; font-size: 11.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "pea nancy"; font-size: 9.0pt;">By
far the most important tip of all is to proclaim your undying love for your
little darling loudly and proudly.
Perhaps it is when they are on their way back to the class line after lunch
or maybe it is when you are dropping them off at school or a friend’s or wherever,
no matter the situation make sure everyone in earshot knows how much you love
that little one. Even though your son
may tell you that being lovey-dovey is limited to times when only family is
around, he really will be beaming with joy.
Bonus point for giving big hugs and kisses too.<span style="font-family: "pea nancy"; font-size: 11.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "pea nancy"; font-size: 10.0pt;">So there you have it, an
experienced mom’s tips for remaining cool during the preteen years. Though it is soul-shattering, the ease of a
minivan when you have four preteens and an infant is undeniable. While leggings may not always be the best
choice of pants, when you are a busy mom it’s at least a step above
pajamas. Even though they don’t want to
admit it, the kids love when you bring them lunch or even when you stick the
sweet note in their lunchbox. It can be embarrassing
for your child to have you talk to their friends but as a parent it is
important to know who they are hanging out with. Your kids really do want you to have an
interest in their lives and friends even if they act like they don’t<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 10.0pt;">…<span style="font-family: "pea nancy"; font-size: 10.0pt;">it’s
one way you show that you care. Most
importantly they are never too old to know how much you love them. They might not want to hear it yelled loudly
across a crowded room but they do want to hear it, know it, and feel it. Make peace with the fact that you are going
to embarrass them and they are going to want to pull away, but remember the
best way to be the coolest mom is to play an active positive role in your child’s
life.

Way back in February of 2012 I had a blog post titled DIY Lesson Plan Book. This post was so popular that it was actually published in a national teaching magazine. 3 years later, I am still doing my post-it planner and I am still in love with it. The ONLY thing that I have changed this year, is that I bit the bullet and invested in an Erin Condren planner. I believe that if you type my referral code victoriamiller1214 as a promotional code when ordering, you get a discount. I know for sure that you can get free shipping through RetailMeNot. https://www.erincondren.com/referral/invite/victoriamiller1214

So here is my new and improved planner

The biggest question I am asked is "What do you do if your plans have to be turned into admin?"
My district uses Eduphoria for all teacher planning. In my grade level, we plan on the same document and then save it to our own teacher plan folder on Eduphoria. My principal is able to access it at any time. That being said, I do not find the Eduphoria planner to be helpful in my daily routine. I like to have my plans written as more of a "To Do" list. Since its already been planned out, I like to have the main points on sticky notes so I know so I have a visual of what I need to do each lesson and I can just check it off the list. That is what works for me...I like to have a brief checklist of what needs to be done, I like having my subjects color-coded, and I like things printed out (not just on my screen). By no means does this mean that my way of planning is perfect for everyone.

For those of you who do have to turn in plans or if you have to turn in your actual plan book, then you can always copy the pages or print off your plans from your computer.

You do not have to have a fancy-schmancy planner in order to have a post it note plan book. My original post show you exactly how you can make your own with just a spiral notebook and post-its.
I just created these labels for your teacher toolbox in a teal and coral color scheme. Since this is my first attempt at making them, they are FREE on my TpT Store. Click here download them and let me know what you think.

In case you aren't sure what a Teacher Toolbox, here is a brief overview.

First, you purchase a toolbox like one of these from

After you have your toolbox, you can fill it with all sorts of things that you would normally have in your desk like pens, pencils, highlighters, paperclips, etc. For an added decorative touch, you can spray paint the outside of the case to match your classroom theme and place labels in the front to finish off the look. :)

Hope you are all doing well. I am trying my hand at making clip art for the very first time and I am in need of your assistance. I have an owl clip art set up on my TpT Store right now and it is FREE (for a limited time). I am just trying to make sure that the file is set up in a way that is easily downloaded and that the graphics are usable. Please do me a huge favor (if you are a fan of my Owl Theme products) and download my owl graphic and let me know what you think. If you love them, please give them a 4 star rating. If you have any problems, please let me know here on my blog so I can work out any kinks. I want to make sure that the file is 100% perfect before I start charging for the clip art.

Thanks for all your input! Click on the picture to download my Owl Clip Art (absolutely free through this weekend).
I am completely over the moon and I can't wait to start this journey! I'm filled with nervous excitement...kindergarten is it's own special level of crazy. I will certainly be searching the blogging world and combing through Pinterest to find ideas. I have two kindergarteners (oops, they are now firsties) at home already...having a classroom full of them is going to be a challenge. I'm confident however that I will do fine. I certainly know that my 7 months teaching severely autistic children has given me a new way of looking at things and more patience than I ever thought possible.

I am truly blessed.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16015646605091506189noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-788184728068437749.post-18351252096861247422014-05-11T14:07:00.000-04:002014-05-11T14:07:03.660-04:00ReflectionsHere we are at the end of the school year and most teachers are counting down to the last day of school. I wish that I was in the same boat. My favorite part of May was always planning out my classroom for the next school year. I'd think about what worked out well and what didn't in regards to classroom setup, behavior management, and lesson planning. I'd start making lists for what I needed to purchase for the upcoming year and my favorite...drawing sketches of my classroom. Yes, I was the teacher that made detailed drawings to scale of every corner of my classroom right down to the labels on the buckets. I'd take pictures of everything to use as reference during the summer while the building was closed and I had no access. Then on the first teacher workday I would be completely prepared and know exactly how I would organize things. Setting up my new classroom took half the time.

But now at the end of this 2013-2014 school year I sit with a heavy heart. All of my teaching things are boxed up in the garage, where they have been since I moved back to Texas mid school year 2012, patiently waiting for the day that they can get some good use. Divorce changes your life in ways that you'd never expect. Unfortunately the breakup of my 12 year marriage also put my teaching career on hold. I identified myself as a teacher, a mother, and a wife...and suddenly two of the three were missing. Teaching was never just a job or even a career...it was and still is my passion. In losing it, I lost a piece of myself and I know I won't feel whole again until I find myself in the classroom once more. So many of you have emailed me saying that you've missed my blog posts and freebies and have asked for suggestions and ideas. Honestly I found it hard to even look at my blog without crying. It was a bitter reminder of everything that I loved so much and poured my heart into but that I no longer had. I felt like a failure that had not only let myself and my family down, but also let down my readers and followers. Life seems to be coming full circle though. Instead of spending May comfortably closing down my classroom, I am spending it looking for a teaching position for the upcoming school year. I'm a bit more positive than I was before and I'm really looking forward to a teaching job fair that I'm attending tomorrow. I don't expect to walk out with a job, but if some interviews come of it, I'll feel like one happy camper.

So what have I been doing in this time away from teaching you might ask. Well, I spent some time as a substitute (which is certainly a very hard position and I am so thankful that as a teacher I was always very thorough with my sub notes...I can guarantee you it is very helpful to subs). Unfortunately there is not a huge demand for subs at the beginning of the school year so I had to find something else to pay the bills. I found myself in a teaching position that I never would have imagined. For the last six months I have been working one-on-one with autistic children. I have definitely learned a lot there that I could use in the regular classroom and ideas that I would love to share with all of you. But that my friends will have to wait for another day.

Happy Mother's Day to all of you!! Enjoy the weekend and the end of the year!
I am aware that the blog is looking a little run down and pictures and links are missing. I will be working on it this weekend and next week to try and make sure that everything is up and running on my end.

Have a great Friday everyone!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16015646605091506189noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-788184728068437749.post-59748814377757782422013-05-31T15:29:00.000-04:002013-05-31T15:29:24.683-04:00UpdateGood afternoon fellow teachers! I hope that the end of the school year is treating all of you very well. Obviously I have not been updating very often and I sincerely apologize for that. I'm going through a very hard time in my personal life and updating my blog and adding new products to my TpT store is just not at the top of my priority list right now. I hate not having the time to update or to add new things. My inbox has been filling up and I sincerely apologize to anyone that has been emailing me. Most folks have been wanting my spelling activities or folder covers. Just click on the links and you can download them for free from my TpT Store. If you are interested in the Daily 5 lessons, Parent Contact Cards, or Calendar please email me but know that there will be a delay. I'll *try* to fill requests once a week, but I cannot guarantee that at this time. I hoping that since summer is upon us you will be a little more forgiving of me.

Thank you all so much for your understanding.
I'm still searching for good doc hosting sites.

Hi everyone! I'd previously posted before about having Daily 5 Smartboard files available that I'm happy to share. Several of you have emailed me requesting them and I think for the most part I've been able to send them to you without any problem (occasionally they get bounced back because of the email providers restrictions). In an effort to make things easier for everyone I'm checking out having the files hosted online so that you can easily download the file. So...THIS IS AN EXPERIMENT. I do not know of great file hosting sites (especially for "notebook" files) but this is one that I found and I figured I'd try it out. Below is a link to a week-long Daily 5 mini-lesson I uploaded. Feel free to try it out. If you do try it out, please leave honest feedback in the comments. Was it easy, a pain to deal with, do you know of a better file host...anything. I appreciate your input.
I had been shocked to find that the pictures on my blog had been down and that caused distress for some of my loyal followers. The biggest complaint about pictures had to do with my Post-It Note Lesson Plan Book. I have updated the pictures from the original post from February 19th, but I am reposting the information here just to make it a little easier to find if needed. :)

DIY POST-IT NOTE PLAN BOOK....Oh yeah!

The meat and potatoes of this post....my lesson plan book which I am in LOVE with! In the past I have read about people using post-it note lesson plan books and it sounded like a complete waste of time. Why write it out when I could type it up and print it? Boy was I WRONG! At my school, in my grade level, each person is responsible for planning a particular subject. Essentially the same plans gets passed around every year and everyone, including myself, retype or rewrite the plans so that they are in our own personal format. I've spent years trying every lesson plan format under the sun to find the one that was perfect for me. The last four years I've typed my plans and printed them, hoping to reuse them but found that I couldn't because the dates didn't match up or something changed last minute. This year I was frustrated with all of the re-doing that I just decided that I'd paperclip all the plans that my team gave me and just stick a post it note on it every day with whatever I was going to do. This worked pretty well for the school year. Then one day an official that was pretty high up in the county came tearing through our school picking apart everything around. Now, the official didn't stop by my room to complain about anything, but I figured it would be best to lose the paper clipped pile of plans. Then the thought of the post-it note lesson plan book popped into my head. I realized at that moment that is was BRILLIANT! So, I made my own lesson plan book with color coded post-it notes that is easy to reuse next year. Notes can easily be moved to different days or different pages depending on my schedule.

So, are you interested yet? Well if you are, here is what you will need:

Spiral notebook (I would suggest one that has a vinyl cover since it will last longer)

Post-it notes (I like the "super sticky" ones)

Sharpie or black marker

Ruler

Scissors

Post-it tabs (optional)

Notebook cover or portfolio (optional)

Step 1: Assemble your materials

Grab the items listed above and clear off a space on the kitchen table, it's time to get our DIY on. :)

Step 2: Decide on a plan

I sketched out my idea of how I wanted to set up my plan book. I organized mine in a way that worked for me. The days of the week going left to right across the top an the subject going top to bottom down the side. Technically I didn't have to list the subject, I could have listed the time frame instead since I color coded my plans according to subject. (Blue for math, pink for reading, and green for other. I have other because writing, science, and social studies all get lumped into the same kind of time frame and due to scheduling I'm not able to hit every one each day.)

Step 3: Lay out and measure

I set up my post-its where I wanted them (I just placed the whole pad where I wanted it so I'd have an idea of what space I needed. Then I drew my lines. If you use a sharpie, the line will kind of bleed through so when you turn the page over you don't have to remeasure, just use the ruler to trace over the straight line. After tracing all the lines in the book, I went back and added tabs for the weeks. There are only 36 weeks in our school year, but I have 43 weeks worth of tabs just to be safe. I used the post-it tabs and just cut them into fourths and alternated colors. Then I wrote the week number on the tab. Super easy.

Step 4: Label boxes and add the post-it notes
That's pretty self explanatory. I used small post-it notes to note the math topic (blue), reading story (pink), related AR tests (orange), and week info (yellow). I didn't want to put any of that info on the book permanently. I used light blue for math, pink for reading, and green for other (writing, science, and social studies). The teal color is for specific standards, objectives, essential questions, etc.

Step 5: Start writing your plans

It was surprisingly easy to do this. Obviously these are not scripted 7 point lesson plans. I put down my main ideas for the lesson. Things that make perfect sense to me, and that show anyone else who might be looking that I have planned out my lessons for the day/week. I even drew little pictures for the art activities or projects that I was planning. (These are not the same plans that I would use if I had a sub, but as all of you teachers know...we always write very scripted lessons when we have subs.)

Step 6: Prepare for changes
This it a perfect example for what to do when something unexpected happens that changes your plans. On this week we had a field trip on Thursday. So, I used star shaped sticky notes to show my changes to my plan for the week. Obviously I don't expect to have the same field trip again on the same week next year. The fun shape makes it easy to see that there is a change at that time.

Step 7: Pretty Portfolio (optional)
I happened to have an old leather portfolio hanging around that I hadn't used in years. Since is cost a pretty penny I never got rid of it. So, I used it to cover my new lesson plan book (and it matches oh so well). If you don't have a portfolio or notebook cover, I would highly suggest using a notebook with a vinyl cover since it will last longer.

UPDATED TO ADD...
Step 8: Daily Schedule
On the first page of my plan book I have my schedule for each day along with mini-notes of parent volunteer times or student pull out times. I have my schedule memorized so I don't print it anywhere on my plans, but I do have it in my plan book...just in case. ;)
I hope you enjoy the DIY plan book. It is not too late in the year to make one! If you do decide to make a Post-It Note Plan Book or if you already have one, please leave a comment to let me (and others) know how you like it. :)
With my cross-country move, I've had very little time to keep up in the blogging world but I appreciate the loyal followers who emailed me with concerns. Yikes!! Please know that I am looking into the problem and I'll get it fixed as soon as I can.
